about

~ “People Say” is a testament to a different me. A different place and time from today that not only myself—but everyone fathoms—at least once. It doesn’t exist today, it doesn’t exist tomorrow. Maybe it’s been a year since it’s events—maybe the events are currently happening—maybe they are yet to happen or never will. The confusion of it all is the reason why I'm showing it to you. It’s the reason why I'm alone and by myself with the tools I've always thought could best help me explain what keeps happening to me. And as always, from an honest place —I love you for taking the time to be here and listen. At least for right now. Tah, tah—my darlings.

lyrics

[Verse 1]
Woke up this morning with fresh perspective
I’ve been too reckless
Wrestling with whether or not I deserve respect
For being an introspective wreck
Guess I’ll finally scratch those lines off my checklist
Shit, maybe Damaras was right
I mean, I’m not an average dude
Just an average fool
With no clue what to do with this life
Man—I can’t choose
And I’d ask you but—well
I’m pretty sure you won’t listen to me
You can't relate
Cause certainly any greatness I have's debatable
And all of my relationships fade or they go up in flames
I talk to Mommy 'bout my pain
Wonder if she hear me?
Wonder if her here would change anything?
Cause I’m here with Yvonne
But all I hear is a sonnet
Papa, Mama, and Rodney
Ticking bombs at their age now
So this your one and only chance nigga
You done let the wrong kid advance, boy
You should let me know I really can’t
For I give it everything I fucking have
And never stop rocking your cerebellum
With hella Ella Fitzgerald
I’m melanin in a mellow tone
Alphaville—I’m forever
Young, jet set, and hell bent
On churning every nugget I have
To sell tix—I’m helpless

[Pre-Hook]
Cause people say I’m a run of the mill but—
What people say ain’t always the deal
Bet you a million-dollar chain
If they labeled me famous
People wouldn’t say
You should run for the hills
Ah—I’m a selfish Ellison, ask Labelle
Budd is in my production
I’ll get upset if you’re not honest
When people ask you ‘bout your comments
Promise—

[Chorus]
Lord I thank thy
I’mma have to raise my hands
To clap and praise ya
I put all my trust in you
My friends change up
They cannot relate
But who’m I supposed to turn to
If I cannot depend on you
So don't you ever waste my time
Better not be wasting my time
Less you wanna (less you wanna)
Get up in line with all the other people
I done been pushed aside
Stay wise—I’ve got too many lives
And can’t afford the same mistakes
Again love

[Verse 2]
So I, shine like a diamond
But I’m not Rihanna
Just got too much gamma
Why you throwing shade?
You piss me off
I’mma hulk out on the stage
I don’t want nobody
Seeing me that way
Chill with the BS
P.S.—still the hood’s reject
Plus a couple other things
I probably shouldn’t mention
Like onamonapeia
Wouldn’t wanna be ya
If I ever see ya shit
Scrap your Mama’s Honda
We got a Hummer now
I’m tryna pull up to Benihana’s established
With a bomb chick in a gown on my arm
And a wild clique in stilettos
No violence—they went from waitresses
To giving out wild tips like rhombus
Wow—girls I’m really proud
Go on do your thing
Wait—how’d we get to Amsterdam?
Somebody explain, my life too insane
I would not exchange
Yet I still complain
I just missed my train—aah
All my classmates hate me like Chris
Turned up dead
They’d laugh that I don’t exist
Sift through conversations with Shifman and Bob Power
Like they are the same person
They had just gave purpose to me
What I mean?
Who you oughta believe?
Kids that be in your ears?
Or kids that be on your screens?
Seeing I’ll probably never appear—man
I really hope that you remember me cause—

[Outro]
So don’t you ever
Waste my time, waste my time
Less you wanna (Less you wanna)
Fucking get up in line

Stay wise—
I can’t afford the same mistakes
Again love
